Introduction: How References Become Shared Language
To understand Chinese internet culture, it is not enough to know what a meme means. You must understand what viewers do with it.
Consider four famous examples:
They come from completely different sources. Yet they share the same basic transformation:
The original clip is only the beginning. Its cultural power is produced when viewers quote it, edit it, combine it with other references, and use it to signal community belonging. A meme is a piece of shared social language.
1What Is a 梗?
The Chinese word 梗 (gěng) is often translated as “meme,” but its use is broader. A 梗 can be a line of dialogue, a sound, a misheard lyric, a visual gesture, a reaction format, a recurring editing style, or an ironic phrase.
2“华强买瓜”: A Dramatic Scene Becomes a Reusable Template
From the Chinese crime drama Conquest (征服), Liu Huaqiang confronts a watermelon seller:
The word “瓜” (watermelon) can be replaced with almost anything to question quality, honesty, or reliability:
It compresses an entire attitude of skepticism into a short, humorous reference without requiring a long explanation.
3“鸡你太美”: A Misheard Sound Becomes an Audio System
Developed from a phonetic reinterpretation of “只因你太美” (Just because you are so beautiful) as “鸡你太美” (Chicken, you are so beautiful).
It accumulated basketball performance tropes, audio edits, chicken imagery, and parodies into a complete audio-visual memory system. A short sound, movement, or chicken icon instantly activates the larger reference.
“Chicken, you are so beautiful” communicates words but not the phonetic accident. The joke depends on Chinese sound recognition.
4奶龙: When Cuteness Becomes Ironic Raw Material
奶龙 is a cute yellow animated dragon. Online, it was detached from children's television and reinterpreted through re-editing, revoicing, and placement into absurd, unexpected contexts.
5“我的刀盾”: Recognition Inside Absurdity
Belongs to a newer type of fast, absurdist meme circulation. Viewers do not ask “What does this logically mean?” but rather “Do I recognize this format? What did the creator change?”
6Why Accounts Such as “梗指南” Matter
Bilibili accounts such as “梗指南” (Meme Guide) explain origin stories, original clips, usage rules, and variations. Their popularity proves that meme literacy has immense social value on Chinese platforms.
7Why Recombination Is Central
Chinese memes are frequently combined rather than used independently. A creator might mix a TV drama line, idol audio, animation character, and gaming slang. The pleasure comes from recognizing the collision.
8How to Use a Chinese Meme Without Looking Forced
Inserting a sound or phrase with no relationship to the topic.
Giving a long history lesson that kills timing and surprise.
- Understand the original source & normal use.
- Identify the psychological mechanism (Threat, Mishearing, Cuteness, Absurdity).
- Preserve the recognizable trigger (audio/phrase).
- Change one major element (setting, character, consequence).
- Connect it to the video's core subject.
- Leave room for viewers to continue in comments / 弹幕.
